Solar protection for plastics: new Ceresana study on the global market for stabilizers

Plastics have many enemies, but sunlight and oxygen are among the worst. Polymers must be protected against oxidation, UV rays, and heat with stabilizers. Without stabilizing chemicals, window frames, cables and many other plastic or rubber products could not survive for a long time, and often could not even be manufactured. Ceresana has now investigated the global market for these essential additives for the fifth time. Market researchers expect revenues from stabilizers for plastics and elastomers to grow to USD 6.7 billion annually by 2030.

Wanted: Environmentally Friendly Stabilizers

Stabilizers are mostly based on heavy metals such as lead or tin, but also on calcium, liquid metal soaps and other starting materials. However, stabilizers containing lead are no longer used in the European Union. As a consequence, calcium-based stabilizers are by far the most demanded type in Europe. In other regions, demand for alternative, more environmentally compatible stabilizers is also increasing. Ceresana forecasts global demand for calcium-based stabilizers to grow by 3.3% per year. Sales of tin stabilizers are expected to reach around 235,000 tonnes in 2030. Tin stabilizers are most commonly used in North America. Overall, the Asia-Pacific region is the largest market for stabilizers with a share of around 62%, followed by Western Europe.

Stabilizers for Numerous Applications

The plastics industry, especially the production and processing of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), is the most important consumer of stabilizers. Plastic pipes currently account for the highest demand for stabilizers: around 393,000 tonnes in 2020. The manufacturing of profiles comes in second place, followed by cables and films. As these products are mainly used by the construction industry, the development of this industry is key to the demand for stabilizers. However, there are regional differences: In Europe, stabilizers are mainly used for PVC profiles, while in Asia they are used for pipes. Growing environmental awareness worldwide is leading to the increased use of energy-efficient plastic profiles, which in turn is also increasing demand for stabilizers.

Market Forecasts and Industry Analysis for Stabilizers

Chapter 1 provides a presentation and analysis of the global market for plastic stabilizers – including forecasts up to 2030: consumption as well as revenue are outlined for each region of the world. Furthermore, the global and regional demand is analyzed for each product type and application area. Tin stabilizers, lead stabilizers, calcium-based stabilizers, liquid mixed metal stabilizers and other products are considered specifically. The investigated application areas are: pipes, profiles, films, cables, flooring, and other applications.
Chapter 2 analyzes stabilizers demand and revenues for 16 countries. The demand is examined in detail for each stabilizer type and application areas.
Chapter 3 provides useful company profiles of the most important producers of stabilizers for plastics and elastomers. The useful manufacturer index is clearly arranged according to contact data, revenue, profit, product range, production sites, a brief company profile as well as product types and application areas. Detailed profiles are provided by the 70 most important manufacturers, such as Akdeniz Chemson Kimya San. Tic. A.S., BASF SE, DIC Corporation, Eastman Chemical Company, Evonik Industries AG, Lanxess AG, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, Nan Ya Plastics Corp., Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd., Solvay S.A., and Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd.
