Infotecs At The Forefront Of Quantum Cryptography
New York/Berlin, July 24, 2017 – Infotecs, an internationally known IT security and threat intelligence provider, is developing quantum encryption technology to exchange encryption keys at very high data volumes. Quantum computing has the potential to revolutionize modern computing by attaining computing speeds previously thought impossible. However, computing that is significantly faster would also make it easy to break many of today’s encryption techniques. One reason for this is that if encryption keys are used too frequently, attackers can find statistical patterns that allow decryption of the data. The solution to that problem is to change keys very frequently – sometimes as much as several times per second. Infotecs has invested roughly 4.8 million dollars over three years in the development of a post-quantum cryptography (PQK) technology that manages key exchange. Infotecs, in cooperation with international scientific institutions, is working to develop a marketable, efficient, but affordable solution for the ...

An Internet of Things using chips without power supply
In the context of a project financed by the Austrian Science Fund FWF, a group of researchers from Graz investigated an Internet of Things based on RFID chips without sacrificing security. RFID chips are simple electronic components we frequently encounter in our daily lives, for instance in the shape of anti-theft security tags in shops, electronic ski passes or elements sown into clothing that are removed after having been purchased. RFID chips have also been integrated in passports for a few years now. In essence „passive radio-frequency identification tags“, as the chips are called in technical jargon, are small, paper-thin rudimentary computers which do not have their own power supply but run only on the energy they receive by means of an antenna. Their typical production cost: a few cents. In theory, they can be used to connect objects with the internet, thus creating an „Internet of Things“ (IoT). Devices ...

Transmigration of the soul – social disruptor or bond
Among members of the ethnic-religious Druze minority in the Middle East, reincarnation is a generally accepted phenomenon. With the support of the FWF, the social anthropologist Gebhard Fartacek documents cases of reincarnation and the concomitant social consequences, debates and conflicts. The transmigration of souls (in Arabic: „taqammus“) is a concept that may lend comfort. In the Druze community, the phenomenon is not only enshrined in holy writ but enjoys broad societal acceptance as well. When a person dies, his or her soul – sometimes accompanied by skills or certain character traits – transmigrates to a new-born child. The Arabic root of the term contains the word for „shirt”, suggesting, so to speak, that the soul is being worn again. But „taqammus“ also has a tragic side to it. In his research, supported by the Austrian Science Fund FWF, the social anthropologist Gebhard Fartacek also documents ethno-sociological consequences and conflicts potentially ...

Hiking accidents: take care when descending mountains
Falls account for about half of all hiking accidents. With the support of the Austrian Science Fund FWF, a team led by Martin Faulhaber from the University of Innsbruck is currently investigating what makes hikers slip, trip or stumble. Walking in the mountains is one of the most popular Alpine summer sports. In Austria alone, it is estimated that several million hikers pursue this activity each summer. – Consequently, most hiking accidents occur in the mountains. Every year, about 1,600 people have accidents while hiking in the Austrian Alps, 100 of which are fatal. Slipping followed by twisting one’s ankle and stumbling are the most frequent causes of injuries in the mountains when people fall. Falls currently account for about half (46%) of all hiking accidents, while other causes include cardiovascular problems, losing one’s way or exhaustion. Evaluating Alpine police data Whereas studies do exist on the subject of cardiovascular ...

Running like clockwork – the Imperial Court in Vienna
The administration and organisation of the Viennese Court were astonishingly professional, as a project funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF now demonstrates. For the first time, historians have established precisely who within the structure – from aristocrats to humble staff members – was responsible for what. More than 2,000 people worked at the Viennese Court in the 18th century – from the „Obersthofmeister“, comparable to a Lord Chamberlain, who supervised the entire Court household, down to the stewards, equerries, stable hands and laundresses. The staff in charge of administering the political, public and private life at Court thus had a wide-ranging and demanding variety of tasks to fulfil. „There were radically different tasks that the staff had to cope with“, explains Martin Scheutz from the University of Vienna. Led by this historian, Irene Kubiska-Scharl and Michael Pölzl undertook the first systematic investigation of the Court household across all of ...
