Faecal Pollution – DNA Uncovers Culprit
Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences, Technische Universität Wien and the Medical University of Vienna present the findings of the largest water hygiene study of its kind. Krems, 17 January 2018 – Despite wastewater management and treatment plants, human waste remains the main source of microbial faecal pollution in the river Danube. This is the most notable finding of a comprehensive analysis of faecal pollution in the Danube. The study used a new molecular genetics method that enables the clear differentiation of human microbial faecal pollution from that of animal origin. The currently published study was carried out with the major participation of the Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences under the auspices of the Interuniversity Cooperation Centre for Water & Health in Austria. CSI and forensics can be used to uncover not only serial killers but also the cause of water pollution – when it comes to faecal contamination ...

Improved nutrition for extremely low birth weight preemies
At the neonatology ward of the Vienna General Hospital (Medical University Vienna), physicians compared two mixtures of intravenous lipids for nutrition with support coming from the FWF. The researchers found no amelioration with respect to bile-flow complications in extremely low birth weight preterm babies in incubators, but they did discover more mature brain waves.    In neonatology, complications are a daily occurrence. When babies are born long before term, their organs are not fully developed, rendering their health and bodily functions fragile. Respiratory insufficiency, brain haemorrhage, liver and intestinal problems as well as bacterial infections are some of the typical medical issues involved. In neonatology, medical staff need to be very alert, with iron nerves and great sensitivity. Despite the problems, preemies born as of the 23rd week of pregnancy usually survive the difficult weeks in the incubator without permanent damage. At the Division of Neonatology at Vienna’s General Hospital ...

Unconditionally, Ernst Toller
Ernst Toller was a revolutionary, a man of letters, a politician and an indefatigable writer of letters. With the support of the Austrian Science Fund FWF, a collection of his correspondence between 1915 and 1939 has now been edited with a commentary. It opens up a 24-year window to a period of radical change.   Direct and up-front, that’s the German poet and dramatist Ernst Toller (1893 – 1939). That’s how he writes. For instance in New York on 13 May 1939 in a letter to Prince Hubertus zu Löwenstein: „Reliable friends report that the writer Walter Mehring finds himself in wretched circumstances and close to starvation. I don’t need to tell you who Walter Mehring is. I hear he is in the running for a scholarship. I recommend him most warmly and with great urgency.“ This is by no means the only letter from the energetic author and part-time ...

From anxiety to action
A group of Salzburg-based researchers led by the psychologist Eva Jonas investigates the neuro-psychological mechanisms behind existential threats. What exactly happens in the process between threat and defensive reaction is at the centre of an ongoing study funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF.    It is an interesting phenomenon: climate change is becoming more and more visible, the threat is growing -a situation that seems to call for action. Actually, most people respond with evasion where large and existential threats are concerned. “People tend to avoid the threat and respond indirectly”, notes the psychologist Eva Jonas. Instead of changing their lifestyle and confronting the situation, many people respond by getting angry towards other communities. But what point is there in denigrating another culture for solving climate change? -None whatsoever, since the problem is not solved by suppressing or “outsourcing” it, which only delays the impact. “This ethnocentric attitude doesn’t ...

Climate-friendly measures don’t impair companies’ competitiveness
In an FWF-funded project, a team of researchers from the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO) investigated the effect of climate-protection measures on companies. The influence on competitiveness turned out to be negligible, while the positive environmental impact was confirmed.    Time is running out: the UN recently stated that the measures foreseen by the Paris Climate Accord need to be implemented quickly in order to avoid a potentially disastrous global warming of more than three degrees centigrade. While technologically feasible, implementation is a sensitive political task. Mandatory environmental measures, or so it is said, negatively affect the competitiveness of firms. On the other hand, many entrepreneurs take an interest in CO2-reduction technologies and could well benefit from their adoption. In a project funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF, a research team headed by Michael Peneder tried to approach this issue using scientific methodology, with sometimes surprising results. Different ...

Bioremediation Fungus Yields its Secrets
Molecular-biological analysis using state-of-the-art equipment at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna discovers gene transfer from bacteria – and the corresponding stress! Vienna, 29. November 2017 – Thanks to genes acquired from bacteria, a fungus can degrade an environmentally harmful hydrocarbon – and comes under considerable stress in the process. These remarkable research findings, which were published recently, were obtained by a group from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). The results were made possible thanks to the very latest equipment for genome and transcriptome analysis, the use of which is also open to third parties at the BOKU. Cladophialophora immunda may be a fungus but it is no mere mushroom! This ascomycete or sac fungus, which belongs to the group of yeast fungi, has one very impressive characteristic: it can easily decompose the environmentally harmful hydrocarbon toluene. This makes C. immunda an ...

HIV infection: the brevity of the right moment
In a project funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF, Doris Wilflingseder investigates the initial stages of infection – the time span when the immune system might still stop HIV. „HIV has been intensively investigated in research labs all over the world for more than 30 years“, says Doris Wilflingseder, and throughout that time it has been resisting effective treatment. „The virus mutates incredibly fast and plays a cat-and-mouse game with our immune system“, adds Wilflingseder, a researcher at the Medical University of Innsbruck. Within the context of the FWF-funded project HIV infection and transmission close to reality, the immunologist heads a research group which works on describing the interaction of the virus with the immune system – before the immune deficiency spreads and the body might still defend itself against the virus. Initial contact as pivotal point It is known that HIV infiltrates the genetic material of T helper ...

Clean Figures: New Ceresana Report on the Global Market for Surfactants
Surfactants can form a foam, facilitate the removal of dirt, and enable the mixture of water and oil. Despite concerns of environmentalists, these surface active chemicals are found in almost every household and are also used in numerous industrial applications. „In 2016, a worldwide turnover of almost 31 billion US-dollars was achieved with surfactants“ says Oliver Kutsch, CEO of the market research insitute Ceresana. “We expect another growth of revenues of surfactants of, on average 3.1% per year.” Ceresana analyzed this market already for the third time. Waterproof Figures: Ceresana Study on the European Market for Plastic Pipes
Sewage systems have been around for about 5000 years. However, not everywhere: In France, for instance, more than 5 million households are not connected to the public sewage network. In rural areas in particular, the sewage infrastructure in Europe still has to be expanded. In the cities, it is less about new construction than about replacing old piping systems. For sewage, potable water, cable protection, gas piping, and other applications, pipes made of plastic are becoming more and more popular: They are light-weight, robust, and handy; they are increasingly replacing aluminum, concrete cast iron, copper or steel. Ceresana analyzed the European market for plastic pipes already for the third time. The analysts forecast European demand to increase to over 5.2 million tonnes until 2024. Polyethylene and PVC Are in the Lead The demand for plastic pipes particularly depends on the development of the construction industry. For the construction industry, plastic ...
