cinec – impressions

It is clear that the fields of computer and film are increasingly merging but there is more involved than just the bare hardware; the business models are also changing. This year“s cinec and the cineCongress will focus on this issue as well as showcasing the benefits and advantages of new technologies. Exhibitors can still benefit from the early bird discount.

The sponsors of this year“s Berlinale film festival include Colt and EMC. Colt is a supplier of services relating to the telecommunications field, whilst EMC is the world“s biggest provider of memory capacity. This is a clear indication of the direction that the film industry is heading and the stars of the next Academy Awards could conceivably be posing in front of advertising walls that carry the logos of IT giants such as Amazon, Samsung and Apple.

Whilst on the red carpet, the stars offer a tangible presence; in their new movies however, they only exist as a series of digital bits and bytes stored on a computer before pouring out as pixels from digital projectors into the big screen. More than half of the 2500 films shown in the Berlinale film festival were delivered in digital format as a Digital Cinema Package (DCP) whilst only about eight percent were presented in the classic 35mm format. It is not surprising therefore that the online retailer Amazon is perceived to be selling video streaming at „dumping“ prices.

The film industry must adapt to the realities of digitalization and is utilising mechanisms originating from the Information and Telecommunication industry to do this. That industry is also evolving: business enterprises are faced with mobilization, globalization and growing data streams need to be processed, in real-time where possible. Cloud structures have developed as an auxiliary tool, where data can be accessed from literally anywhere through the internet. Such models can also be applied to the film industry – with consequences especially for distribution aspects. Creative platforms like Kickstarter are already used for financing first cloud projects.

cinec provides the perfect framework for presenting and exploring technical innovations from acquisition to distribution. Highly innovative companies like ARRI, Cooke Optics, Denz, Lightequip, Panther, Techno Crane, Dedo Weigert and many other pioneering companies will present possible technical solutions for the new specifications. Digital technology can sometimes create completely new working conditions – now it is time to explore those changes.

Trade fair manager Angelika Albrecht expects the industry to now to increase its focus on the „aesthetical conquest of the technical means of design“. New viewing habits and altered media usage have enlarged the market, with moving images now having greater relevance. Earlier developments have not disappeared but new trends have accrued and this plurality emphasizes the importance of the international industry gathering cinec .

In addition to the cineCongress which will include exciting seminars and discussions, the glamorous ceremony of the cinecAwards will form the social highlight of this Septembers‘ event. The association CineTechnik Bayern e.V. (CTB) will this year again award the prize for pioneering and innovative achievements in the different areas of film technology.

The tenth anniversary staging of cinec – International Trade Fair for Cine Equipment and Technology – will take place from 21st to 23rd September in Munich, Germany.

The registration process for exhibitors has already begun and discounted early bird booking is available until 31st March 2014 with normal rates applying thereafter.
