What are teenagers spending all their money on

If you were anything like us when we were teenagers, we couldn’t get enough of the latest clothes or jewellery pieces in our local stores. But it seems like US teenagers are shying away from the clothing industry when it comes to spending their hard-earned pocket money, and are instead opting to spend on makeup and beauty.

It should come as no surprise that teens are worried about skincare, especially when there are a lot of hormonal changes and concerns that affect the way their skin develops. But according to the latest data from Piper Jaffray’s Generation Z survey, teens are upping the ante and spending the most on skincare and beauty.

Other high ranking expenses included food and video games, which surprises nobody. But with athleticwear and streetwear leading the way in the clothing department, it’s clear to see that influences like Beyonce and Rihanna (who both have their own lines of streetwear) are impacting on spending habits.

As far as brands go, WWD reports that for beauty, the top shopping destination was Sephora, for activewear the top brand was Nike and the top shopping platform was Amazon – by a significant margin, leading with 38% more than its closest competitor.

In the beauty world, specific brands that garnered a strong response were Neutrogena (available at Priceline), Cetaphil (available at Priceline), Clinique (available at Sephora), Clean & Clear (available at Priceline) and Mario Badescu (available at MECCA). Once again it’s clear that skincare is the biggest beauty concern for teenagers, with the above three brands known for their particular success in clearing breakouts and blemishes.

All in all, the data reflects a pretty clear picture of Generation Z’s chief concerns. The total spending rose 6% from the previous survey, but the actual expenses aren’t hugely surprising. It’s worth noting that as it is a US study the Australian market isn’t reflected, but given that the concerns involved are a fairly universal matter for teens, we’d be surprised if it deviated significantly.Read more at:green formal dresses | orange formal dresses
