Over the past two days of London Collections: Men, it’s been quite clear to see why; British menswear has upped it’s game, offering something for all, be you hetero, metro, homo or spornosexual. On Monday, LC:M favourite James Long gave something to the cool off-duty types with a collection of beachy inspired sportswear.
With influences of laid-back island life by way of the boxing ring, Long’s SS15 collection was a stylish mixture of worn denims, hooded kaftans and textural knits with plenty of mesh. Men of the world take note, this is how to do sportwear.
Jeans and shorts in washed-out denim were given a sporty twist with elasticated boxing waists, and came patched with cheery strips of coloured ribbon. Worn with long striped kaftans and mesh hoodies, the look was gnarly surfer dude with an urban edge.
The boxing theme continued with hooded robes emblazoned in a graffiti-esque scrawl that spelt the designer’s name; a modern and aesthetically pleasing take on branding.
Long is great for a statement knit and this season they came in the form of bubble textured jumpers in bold stripes that hugged the torso. Also on offer were grey jersey sweaters that were printed or embroidered with Long’s looping tag.
Tin-foil-silver jackets could have been challenging, but when paired with jersey shorts or torn-up jeans they became highly desirable.
The socks and sandals combo that clad models‘ feet suggested a trend that is not going away any time soon. Approach with caution, there is a fine line between ironic hipster and old age pensioner.
