Hacienda Tres Rios Resort, Riviera Maya, Mexico, Hosted 5th Annual Latin American Meeting on Sustainable Management of Water

Riviera Maya, Mexico, January 24, 2014 – Sunset World Resorts & Vacation Experiences, with resort properties in Cancun and the Riviera Maya, Mexico, welcomed a select group of international researchers to its Hacienda Tres Rios Resort, Spa & Nature Park in January as part of the project EXCEED, to discuss solutions to avoid a shortage of drinking water and other problems such as pollution, sanitation and sustainability in coastal areas. During the 5th Annual Latin American Meeting, Mexican experts joined participants from Brazil and Germany to analyze the water supplies of mega cities, coastal area engineering and aquatic ecosystems.

Running parallel to the meeting in the Riviera Maya, Mexico, were three other regional meetings on the same topic in other parts of the world, including Ethiopia, Turkey and China. The events were organized by the Center of Excellence For The Cooperation and Development of Sustainable Management of Water, with the support of the Federal Ministry for the Cooperation and Economic Development of Germany, the EXCEED Project and DAAD, the German service of international exchange of students and scientists, one of the largest in the world.

Water is one of the main themes of discussion of recent times about the cooperation for development, being that more than 200 million people in underdeveloped countries do not have access to drinking water and another 3 million do not have sanitary systems to eliminate residual waters.

Hacienda Tres Rios was selected to host the prestigious meeting due to its recognition as a model of sustainable tourism and diverse technologies for the rational use of water, including the capture and use of rain water and water treatment plants, and desalinators that avoid the use of sweet water from the aquifer.

„On behalf of all of the EXCEED meeting participants, I want to express our thanks for all of the generous attentions we received from the staff of Hacienda Tres Rios. Without a doubt, the results of the meeting were excellent and we all enjoyed very much the hotel installations, the climate, cloudy during work days but sunny for our day of rest,“ said Engineer Rodolfo Silva, one of the scientists attending the meeting.

Among the objectives of the researchers on an international level is the development of basic proposals for the sustainable management of water, including technologies for the multiple use and re-use of water and enabling experts to be advisors of public policy. Their results would be available to governments, authorities, and organizations to be included in the political agenda of countries which are being further developed and industrialized. In Mexico, the University of Guadalajara is part of this organization, together with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and other universities in Asia, Middle East and Africa.
