Thankfully, a number of fans were ready and willing to call out the absolute bullshit that is being offended by the concept of Wonder Woman that differs from the traditionally leaner versions of the characters.
Watching all the people here complain about a character who has realistic proportions is very telling. All the cries of ‚fat!‘ and ‚whale!‘ make it clear that misogynistic attitudes remain rife,“ one person tweeted. Another said, „I think that Wonder Woman is a concept that is beyond body shape or skin color (or even, dare I say, gender). I applaud DC’s initiative and it saddens me to read such backlash, which is against what Wonder Woman is about.“
Ultimately Eisenberg tells Allure, she’s happy to see the positive responses from people who’ve said the piece makes them feel good. „I think one of the reasons I was asked to do this is that I’m not a traditional comic book artist, so I would present something from a different perspective,“ she wrote on social media, „The fact that this was so controversial just makes me want to continue to draw diverse body types and create more art that people can hopefully see themselves in. Strength and beauty can come in lots of awesome forms! I don’t think one form negates the others?“
Herbert Burns -280 vs. Daniel Pineda +230, featherweights: Burns (11-2) has impressed early in his UFC career. After picking up a first round arm-triangle submission on Dana White’s Contender Series, Burns picked up a first-round knockout win over Nate Landwehr in his official Octagon debut and followed up with a submission of Evan Dunham in just 80 seconds in his next fight, running his current winning streak to five fights. In 13 career fights, Burns has eight submission wins, making him one of the more dangerous men in the featherweight division in the grappling arena. Pineda (26-13) doesn’t bring a sparkling record to the Octagon, but does have loads of experience fighting on big stages. Pineda fought in the UFC from 2012 to 2014, when a 1-4 stretch led to his release from the promotion. Before and after his first UFC stint, Pineda was a member of the Bellator roster and also won two fights on the same night in the 2019 PFL featherweight tournament in 2019, only to have both fights overturned for a failed drug test. Now, six years after his first release from the UFC, he will return to the Octagon.
It was quickly ratioed with many fans responding to the post expressing their distaste and noting that the character looked nothing like Wonder Woman.
Jax added, “The color scheme is cool, but the proportions greatly disrespect the character. And trust me there are women who detest this imagery just as men do when it comes to obesity (legit issue). Rooster Teeth tried, but sorely took an L with this shit lol.”
She wrote, “Sooooo… Due to the subject matter of my art, I’m often asked to draw characters inspired by iconic women. Recently I was asked to create a piece inspired by Wonder Woman, in my own style, for an upcoming one-off artist collab.”
She went on to detail that the character seen on the variant cover is not supposed to be Wonder Woman, but an alien character wearing a Wonder Woman shirt.
She explained, “I love drawing aliens with realistic body types, living their lives, comfortable with themselves. So, I drew an alien character with a realistic body, wearing a more everyday version of the Wonder Woman outfit.”
The DC Nation posted their cover on Twitter, and it was immediately met with hundreds of comments hating on her body (as well as on the non-traditional art style… and on me personally 😎),” she added.
Jairzinho Rozenstruik -135 vs. Junior Dos Santos +115, heavyweights: After losing for the first time in his MMA career when he was knocked out in just 20 seconds by Francis Ngannou, Rozenstruik (10-1) will now face off with former UFC heavyweight champion Dos Santos (21-7). One fight before the loss to Ngannou, Rozenstruik scored the biggest win of his career with a dramatic comeback knockout against Alistair Overeem just four seconds before the final bell in a fight he was going to lose on the scorecards. All five of Rozenstruik’s UFC fights — and 10 of his 11 career bouts — have ended by knockout, including a pair of Octagon wins that took 9 and 29 seconds, respectively. A win over Dos Santos would be Rozenstruik’s second over a former UFC champion, having knocked out Andrei Arlovski this past November. Dos Santos won the heavyweight championship in 2011, knocking out Cain Velasquez in the UFC’s debut on Fox, before losing the title back to Velasquez two fights later. He has lost two more shots at the championship and now enters UFC 252 on a two-fight losing skid that saw him knocked out by Ngannou and Curtis Blaydes.
