(Photo:formal dresses online australia)A Cambridge designer arrived wired for success when she presented the results of two year’s work at this year’s Ag Art Awards.
Sandy Bromwich made a skirt, top, shoes and hat for Wired, which won first place in the designer traditional category in the 20th Ag Art Awards, announced at Fieldays, Mystery Creek, on Friday.
„It’s made with farm gate electric fence wire,“ Bromwich said. „I thought it would be really awesome if I could find form and texture within the product.“
Bromwich, who has won three third placings in previous Ag Art Awards, spent two years knitting together wire to create texture and shape.
„I almost had it ready for last year’s competition, but it just wasn’t right so I had to pull it apart,“ she said.
Old style French knitting was used for the hat, and the top was created with crocheted wire, including a spider’s web feature woven into the back.
Wellington fashion student Anneliese Theron, 21, was first in the Avant Garde section for her dress, Rope. She broke two mannequins creating a kimono-style dress with an enormous cape, made from different types of rope and twine.
The aspiring costume designer spent two months on the garment, working on it between projects at Massey University.
A total of 26 entries were in the running for top spots in the three categories: Classroom Couture, Designer Traditional and Avant Garde.
First-place winner in Classroom Couture was 16-year-old Chloe King from Whangarei with Felt like Flowers. The main component of the dress was made by hand-felting wool. Overlaying the dress was an overcoat made of alkathene pipes shaped into flowers. Second place went to Sabina East with Cow Shed Blow Fly, while Sophie Ward scored third with Boot-A-Licious, made from old gumboots.
Colleen Mak with Wood You Wear It, took second place in the Designer Traditional section, with Shepards Past Time, by Lizzie Maundrell and Millie Law, third.
