In 1946, Ford launched a modeling agency with her husband, Jerry Ford, in their apartment in Manhattan. During her time at Ford Models, Ford and her husband, who managed the company’s finances, helped grow the careers of a slew of top models, including Twiggy, Christie Brinkley, Brooke Shields and Christy Turlington.
Ford was more than just a businesswoman to many of the models she worked with, as she would often let them stay at her home to „keep a close eye on them so they’d stay out of trouble and make their early-morning appointments,“ she said in an interview with American Photo magazine. According to the article, rebellious girls who stayed out late and partied were often asked to leave Ford’s home.
Ford’s daughter Katie took over for her mother as CEO of Ford Models in 1995. She held this title until 2007, which is when Ford Models was sold to Stone Tower Equity Partners.
People magazine reported that Ford was admitted to a hospital after falling at her apartment last week. It is not yet known if her death is related to this recent fall.
