With a lifting capacity of up to 48,000 t, the ship will remove topsides in one piece and transport them to land for deconstruction. The screw pumps are valued at EUR600,000 and are specially designed to deliver the high pumping capacity needed for the project.

The catamaran “Pieter Schelte” of Allseas Group will lift entire platforms from their undersea supports and transport them onto land for decommissioning. Land-based deconstruction is much safer and more economical than conventional disassembly at sea. This innovation would not be possible without a Topside Lifting System (TLS) on an unprecedented scale. Its capacity of 48,000 t is equivalent to more than 80 fully loaded Airbus A380 jets. Bosch Rexroth developed a unique drive and control solution for what will be the world’s largest mobile heavy-lifting system for offshore installations. Nearly 100 Allweiler screw pumps will handle pumping of the hydraulic oil. Pumps of the “SNF” series pump up to 2300 l/min, making them ideal for large volumes required.

GKN Sinter Metals is proud to introduce its Transversal Flux Motor at the CWIEME 2013 (Berlin, Germany). The development of this motor is a result of a collaboration between GKN and RWTH University of Aachen. GKN Sinter Metals has successfully demostrated that the use of Soft Magnetic Composite (SMC) materials can allow for the design of motors featuring smaller dimensions, lower weight and reduced noise. The prototype named “Elektra” is fully serviceable.

In its basic version the motor consists of a stator element, a copper winding and a rotor with permanent magnet. The stators are made of Soft Magnetic Composite (SMC) material consisting of pure iron particles with diameters of less than 0.2 millimeters coated with an insulation layer. Being pressed to the desired shape, the material is cured at temperatures between 600 – 700°C, much lower than the 1000°C commoning used in sintering, in order to not cause damage to the insulation layer. This insulation layer allows three-dimensional magnetic properties which are absolutely essential for the motor design and effect a significant reduction of eddy current losses. Another benefit provided is the reduction of the copper content therefore less weight and cost compared to traditional radial flux motors. The copper winding along with two identical stator poles in combination with a permanent magnet in the rotor generate a greater toque density. In order to produce a motor with an output of one kilowatt, three phase elements have to be assembled in line with a displacement of 120 degrees each. Higher performance can be achieved with a modular design of several motors assembled in line. Their frequencies range from 500 Hz up to 30 kHz.

GKN Sinter Metals offers three versions of SMC material. The special properties of the powder and the insulation layer allow specific control of permeability and losses. The three-dimensional stator design approach is free, particularly in axial direction.

Another advantage of the transversal flux motor vs. the radial flux motor is its compact design with as much as 30 percent reduced in size. With only small masses rotating in the rotor supported by axial magnetic forces results in a moter with low-noise.
The development of the transversal flux motor coincides with the growing demand for high-performance electric motors of compact design and low weight. Shipbuilding: transfluid develops an economical process for forming tubes of up to 325 mm diameter

Complex requirements that place increasing demands on efficiency are mission-critical challenges for tube forming applications too. This is particularly true for shipbuilding. The high investment in the tooling needed for forming machines has been an unnecessary cost driver – until now. A corresponding tool had to be available for every possible combination of tube geometry and diameter. The engineers at transfluid already recognized this back in 2011. At that time they developed an efficient solution for the tool-independent forming of tube ends with the first CNC rotary pipe forming machine . With a second, new process the company is now marking a further milestone in forming – without the tooling complexity.

A flaring machine that does not require special tool inserts
“We have managed to develop a flaring machine that has a positively guided cone. The machine only requires aclamp for flanging jobs”, is how Gerd Nöker, Managing Director of transfluid, summarizes the technical innovation. Effective attention to detail allowed the engineers to develop the technology to reach a commercially viable level. This means that the flaring cone no longer corresponds with the forming geometry, as with conventional systems. The benefits include a lower investment in – and stock of – tooling, minimum setup times and a tube manufacturing process optimized to the cycle-time; because the shape is sometimes achieved in two forming stages – or the flange is fitted to the tube end by welding.

Freely swinging for a wide range of options
Because the flaring cone is located on a rotating shaft it is relatively difficult to control. This is why the cone is allowed to swing freely and only the axial feed is used as a “control medium”. This makes the construction of the whole tube foming machine simple and robust, and all forming options remain open during the forming process itself. The first machine, which was recently delivered, is capable of flanging tubes of 42.4 to 325 mm. The transitional radius between the tube and flange can be freely selected and the radius can be very angular or well rounded. Special, cost-intensive tooling has now become a thing of the past.
