How to make a protein trap
Once they can synthesise molecules of active natural substances, scientists will be able to harness nature’s medicine cabinet for the drugs of the future. By testing newly developed synthesising processes and catalysts, a project funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF managed to produce the promising natural substance Brefeldin A faster and in larger quantities. In its day, penicillin was discovered by accident. Many people know the story of Alexander Fleming who returned to his lab in London after a holiday and found mould on a culture plate with a bacteria culture that had not grown. Further tests revealed that the mould killed gram-positive bacteria but was well tolerated by human beings. It took years until Fleming’s colleagues were able to use penicillin as a lifesaving antibiotic. Today, scientists screen nature’s medicine cabinet very systematically and test the effect of natural substances. In order to do that, they need significantly ...

Neurosciences: a stress test for men and women
Whilst it is true that women and men respond differently to stress, current neuroscientific research only partially confirms traditional gender stereotypes. Other factors heavily contribute to the stress response such as self-esteem, hormones and stress regulation, as has been demonstrated by a project funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF. How people react to stress is subjective. Gender also plays a fundamental role. Scientific studies have shown that the stress hormone cortisol is activated in different ways in men and women. „Stress is influenced by many factors“, emphasises Birgit Derntl from the Eberhard Karls Universität in Tübingen. In order to derive a better understanding of the related factors, the clinical psychologist and professor at the Centre for Integrative Neurosciences investigated stress reactions among men and women from a subjective, hormonal and neuronal standpoint. Subjective feeling versus hormonal reaction That the subjective experience of stress does not necessarily correspond to bodily ...

Winter tourism in a growth spiral
The changes brought by winter tourism to Alpine valleys in Vorarlberg have been documented by a project funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF. Researchers examined three ski resorts to trace the impact of skiing on the natural environment, social fabric, regional economy and the local inhabitants between 1920 and 2010. The promise of winter holidays for everyone makes the Alps an ecologically vulnerable area. Winter tourism in Austria turns Alpine valleys into industries. That has been highlighted in a project, funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF and led by the environmental historian Verena Winiwarter, which focused on the development of winter tourism in the 20th century. According to Winiwarter, the project „How skiers‘ sensations shaped Alpine valleys during the 20th century“ fills a research gap: „Environmental history needs to focus on those social spheres that have a big impact on their respective environment. The forces involved differ from ...

The grammar of movement
Like spoken language, sign language has a complex and differentiated structure. One just has to be able to discern and interpret it. With the support of the Austrian Science Fund FWF, a research team from Klagenfurt is working on the elements of a grammar of sign language.   It is language that distinguishes Homo sapiens from animals. A complex system in which smaller units combine into larger units, into sentences, into statements. Language is spoken, written down – and it is signed. „In sign language“, says Franz Dotter, „we find all the phenomena that we know from spoken languages, just expressed visually.“ Sign language is not a haphazard support tool, it is a full language in its own right, a means of communication.   And yet, some areas of sign language are simply „terra incognita“. How, for instance, can you emphasise something in sign language? How are texts segmented into ...

Using mathematics to hunt for computer errors
Improving the security of computer software and hardware requires mathematical analytic methods. Thanks to research by a team of computer scientists led by Krishnendu Chatterjee in a project funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF, these methods will work significantly faster in the future.   Security gap in application discovered, update urgently recommended. Alerts like that can confront us every week. Often, a comprehensive update that addresses teething troubles is already offered when a new programme is launched. This creates manifold problems, and public entities as well as businesses are often exposed to attacks by hackers. Software is used in a growing number of sensitive areas where a computer failure might even be life threatening. It has to be noted that not all fields are affected in the same way, many computer systems run as unfailingly as the proverbial Swiss clockwork. While hardware is usually very reliable, it is the ...
